Year 3 Reading NAPLAN Practice: 418+ Questions
Year 3 is the very first time Australian students sit NAPLAN, and for many children the Reading test is their first experience of answering comprehension questions under timed conditions. The passages are short and age-appropriate — picture books, simple recounts, and illustrated information texts — but the format itself can be unfamiliar. BandBoost helps your child practise reading and answering in the same style they will see on test day, so nothing comes as a surprise.
What is tested in Year 3 NAPLAN Reading?
Year 3 NAPLAN Reading assesses whether students can find information directly stated in a short passage (literal comprehension), understand basic vocabulary from context clues, and make simple connections between ideas in a text. Questions typically ask students to identify a character's feelings, locate a specific fact, match a heading to a paragraph, or choose the meaning of a word based on how it is used in the sentence. Most passages are under 200 words and include illustrations or diagrams that support the text.

Common questions about Year 3 Reading NAPLAN
What kind of texts appear in the Year 3 NAPLAN Reading test?
Year 3 Reading passages include short stories, illustrated information texts, simple recounts, labelled diagrams, and picture book excerpts. All passages are written for an 8- to 9-year-old reading level and are typically under 200 words.
How many questions are in the Year 3 Reading test?
The Year 3 NAPLAN Reading test contains approximately 35 to 40 questions across several passages. Students have 45 minutes to complete the test, and most questions are multiple-choice.
My child can read well at home. Why do they need NAPLAN Reading practice?
Reading a book for enjoyment and answering comprehension questions are different skills. NAPLAN Reading requires students to locate specific evidence in the text, eliminate wrong answer options, and manage their time across multiple passages. Practising the question format builds confidence and prevents avoidable mistakes on test day.
What is the difference between literal and inferential questions?
Literal questions ask about information directly stated in the text — for example, "What colour was the dog?" Inferential questions require reading between the lines — for example, "How did the character feel about moving house?" Year 3 Reading is mostly literal, but a small number of inference questions appear and are often the ones students find tricky.
