Year 3 Writing NAPLAN Practice: 22+ Questions
The Year 3 Writing test is many children's first experience of producing a full piece of writing under timed conditions. In 2024 and beyond, the prompt is typically narrative — students are asked to write a story based on a given theme or stimulus. At this age, the markers are looking for a clear beginning, middle, and end, simple sentence variety, and ideas that connect to the prompt. BandBoost gives your child practice with the format and AI feedback on every draft so they walk into the test knowing exactly what is expected.
What is tested in Year 3 NAPLAN Writing?
Year 3 NAPLAN Writing is assessed across 10 criteria set by ACARA. At this level, markers focus most heavily on: having a recognisable text structure (beginning, complication, resolution), staying on topic, using basic punctuation correctly, spelling common words accurately, and producing enough text to demonstrate writing ability. Vocabulary does not need to be sophisticated — it needs to be appropriate and varied enough to show the student is not repeating the same words. Paragraphing is not expected at this level, but a clear sequence of events is.

Start Practising FreeUnderstanding Year 3 NAPLAN bands
Year 3 Writing is reported on a scale from Band 1 to Band 6 based on the combined score across all 10 marking criteria. Band 2 is the national minimum standard. A student at Band 2 can produce a recognisable piece of writing with a basic structure. Higher bands reflect greater control over language, more developed ideas, and consistent accuracy with spelling and punctuation.
Common questions about Year 3 Writing NAPLAN
Is Year 3 NAPLAN Writing narrative or persuasive?
In recent years, Year 3 has been given a narrative (story) writing prompt. However, ACARA can set either narrative or persuasive prompts for any year level. BandBoost includes practice for both types so your child is prepared regardless of what appears on test day.
How long does my child have for the Writing test?
Year 3 students have 40 minutes for the Writing test. This includes reading the prompt, planning, writing, and checking their work. BandBoost practice tests use the same time limit so your child learns to pace themselves.
My child can tell great stories aloud but struggles to write them down. How can BandBoost help?
This is very common in Year 3. The gap between oral storytelling and written expression is one of the biggest challenges at this age. BandBoost helps by providing structured prompts that break the writing process into steps (plan, write, check) and AI feedback that identifies where the written version loses the story's energy.
What does the AI feedback actually look like for a Year 3 student?
BandBoost's AI uses warm, encouraging language appropriate for 8- to 9-year-olds. Feedback highlights what the student did well first (e.g. "Great opening — you made me want to read on!"), then gently suggests one or two specific improvements (e.g. "Try adding what your character could see and hear to make the reader feel like they're in the story").
How is the Writing test marked?
NAPLAN Writing is marked by trained assessors against 10 ACARA criteria including text structure, ideas, vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling. Each criterion receives a score, and these combine into a total. BandBoost's AI mirrors these 10 criteria so the practice feedback matches the real marking approach.
